Paris 2024: Mondo Duplantis Raises the Bar in a Magic Olympic Moment

It was well that this Monday evening in Paris Duplantis would supersede anything in the outside athletics, and nobody knew that better than Mondo Duplantis. In 2019, above this 24-year-old Swedish pole vaulter, who not only won but, for the ninth time in an outstanding career, broke the men’s pole vault world record in the gold medal round of the 2024 Olympic Games, various articles were written.

A historical evening

Duplantis dazzled with skillful, determined brandishes never to give up, leaving the crowd of 70,000 in awe at the Stade de France before Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, his family, coaches, fellow competitors, and adoring fans. And so, as the tension mounted, one official was heard to comment just in the nick of perfect timing: “Somewhere in the world, a little boy is watching this, and his mind is lit up with the idea that someday he might be able to fly.” It was an overwhelming sentiment, as Duplantis orchestrated an athletic symphony with such beauty of vaulting to etch that performance into a moment that will remain part of Olympic history.

Breaking Records and Raising Bars

All that he set out to achieve was victory the first whack at the Olympic record—6.10 meters. He prearranged himself for one big attempt at 6.25 meters, the Olympic record set for the first time, which had never been broken in that arena. He took a run down the runway toward the bar for this Herculean leap, the stadium decibel count soaring to new heights, quite redolent of the awe and anticipation evinced by everyone present.

While other competitors among them his closest rival, Sam Kendricks had now become his biggest fans, the crowd was electric, chanting and clapping as one, grasping the understanding of the moment and Duplantis’s courage for that bit more in him, what is humanly possible. The crowd now sings “Alleur de Feu, alleur de feu,” and surely felt the same when he set himself ready for his attempt.

The Journey to 6.25 Meters

There’s always been a long road ahead ever since Mondo broke the world record, that of the first vault over 6.17 meters in February this year. He had been setting a new bar every time at remarkable heights, one centimeter at a time. His Xiamen Diamond League in April, before coming to the Paris Games, had him set a new personal best of 6.24 meters. Now, upon the world’s great stage, he wanted to take it just that little bit further: He knew he was supported by the crowd and his fellow athletes.

Graceful, powerful like none other Duplantis cleared the bar at 6.25 meters, sending the crowd into huge bursts of mostly applause and shouting. It was sheer merry mayhem across borders as fans from all walks of life rose to celebrate this incredible feat at the tops of their voices. Right then, he etched himself into the history books, remaining one of the finest athletes ever to have graced the pole-vault event with his presence.

It needed just five jumps during the final for the Swede to take the world crown, a tremendous level of consistency at the event. USA’s Kendricks managed to pick up silver from a very strong 5.95m while Greece’s Karalis Emmanouil secured bronze with a mark of 5.90m. Although others around him were enjoying their moment, and deservedly so, every athlete there could not help but be staggered by the quite extraordinary talent and poise of Duplantis: the epitome of being a true Olympian.

That was the Olympics right there: finding out that there is a part of it where people really do respect and look up to each other, despite being rivals in the sport. When Mondo Duplantis celebrated, he knew he was not alone in the moment, and it was exactly like that with any other athlete.

On the Horizon: The Legacy of Mondo Duplantis

In achieving that in Paris, Mondo Duplantis did not just enter the Olympic history books. He also proved that other aiming individuals within the realm of athletic sports could draw inspiration from his example, being one of the small boys who just watched his idols to become a world record holder with passion, dedication, and an eye on greatness.

As Duplantis continues to raise the bar of records, both literally and otherwise, he imprints his mark forever into the sport of pole vaulting. With such a depth of passion related to the event and an extraordinary talent coming together, he has made himself an iconic great example to follow for aspiring athletes, from the plainest to the most talented.

And so, while the Paris 2024 Olympics probably raised the bar high, in the days and years hence, the legend that is Mondo Duplantis will doubtless be there to push so many to follow their dreams and never stop in reaching for the stars. There is so much from store from this fantastic athlete as he rises to heights and breaks records.
