Mohammed Amaan: Orphaned, From Struggles to Leading Under-19 Cricket Team of India by Sabyasachi Choudhury
Cricket, being India’s most favored game, has held the innumerable epics of struggle and victory. In the middle of such inspirations, came rags-to-riches turn-of-fate stories which enthusiasts of cricket lovers take delight in. Mohammed Amaan, India’s new skipper of the Under-19 cricket team, registered another masterpiece of courage and willpower. It was life not just about cricket; it was a fight against personal tragedy and struggle to reach the desires at the youth level.
Early Life and Tragic Losses
Mohammed Amaan was born in Saharanpur city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Leading a life beset with tragedies, Amaan lost his parents within two years when he was barely 16 years old. His mother, Sayba, died in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic had literally pressed the pause button on the world. Two years later, in 2022, his father Mehtab-a truck driver-died. These sudden deaths made Amaan parentless and, simultaneously, put the duty of looking after his three younger siblings in his hands.
Amaan remembered the day he lost his father: “The day I lost my father, it was as if I were to grow up in a moment. I had to look after my younger sister and two brothers. After that incident, seriously speaking, I wanted to give up cricket to find some work in Saharanpur.” The young cricketer was at the crossroads now: he had to think whether to look after his family or pursue his interest in cricket.
Struggle Behind Success
Amaan had his share of hardships that tested his determination. With limited resources and having to shoulder responsibilities for his family, Amaan often slept on many nights with empty stomachs. “There is nothing worse than hunger,” shared Amaan. “I never waste food now because I know how hard it is to come by.” His early days were a far cry from the life he lives now, flying out for matches and staying in good hotels. During the trials of the UPCA age group in Kanpur, I used to travel by general compartment of the train often sitting near the toilet. Now, when flying and staying in good hotels, I just thank God, Amaan said, reminiscing over his past.
However, despite these callous factors, Amaan found some men with compassionate hearts who believed in his talent and potential. Their encouragement and support played an important role in keeping his cricketing dream alive. Support at this stage, along with Amaan’s unflinching dedication to the game, helped him to carry on in cricket.
A Bright Cricketing Career
The cricket field was where Mohammed Amaan’s talent burst forth when he was young. “He started off his cricketing career in the Under-14 category in the 2016-17 season. His performances in those successive seasons earmarked him as a potentially good player. Previous season Amaan played quite an important inning when he scored 363 runs in 8 innings for Uttar Pradesh Under-19 team in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, including 4 half-centuries.”. This phenomenal performance further stretched at the Under-19 Challenger Series, where he was the second run-getter with 294 runs at an average of 98.
His efforts certainly paid off as he was made the captain of Uttar Pradesh’s Under-19 cricket team in 2023. For obvious reasons, the great captaincy potentials, batting prowess, and bowling skills exhibited have helped him don the captaincy hat for Indian Under-19 cricket. Amaan’s life-what can be noted-is one from oppressed teenager to the captain of the national Under-19 team, a clear example of how unyielding and dedicated he has been in this game.
Leading the National Squad
Currently, Mohammed Amaan captains India’s Under-19 cricket team, which is an assemblage of talent in young and budding cricketers. This team, under his mentorship, is supposed to play against Australia within a couple of months in both the categories: ODI and Test. Players playing in the ODI team include Rudra Patel, Sahil Parikh, Kartikey KP, Kiran Chormale, and many others. The players who have been included in the test category are Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Nitya Pandya, and Vihan Malhotra. Amaan’s leadership will be an important key in leading these young players in the world of international competition.
Look Ahead: A Bright Future
From orphan to captain of the Indian Under-19 cricket team, Mohammed Amaan’s story narrates hope and grit. This development into the world of cricket stands testimony that even archaic circumstances can be surmounted with determination, hard work, and assistance.
And as Amaan goes on to lead his team against massive opposition, his story stands tall to inspire innumerable young cricketers from across the expanse of India. His story is very far from over, and bright seems his future in cricket. Amaan’s is a personal success story, and a ray of hope he stands for everyone that dreams big against all odds.
