Mamata Banerjee wants CBI to fast-track doctor’s rape-murder probe as protests escalate

Citizens outraged by the tragic rape-cum-murder of a trainee doctor inside a Kolkata hospital, which further gathered force in protests that proved compelling on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to do something decisive. Finally, with the protests growing on Wednesday, Banerjee succumbed to welcome the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the probe into the ghastly rape-cum-murder of the trainee doctor to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). She went a step ahead and asked the CBI to complete the investigations by this Sunday itself, unmistakably indicating the press of time and the people’s demand for justice.

Demanding Justice and Accountability
Coupled with demanding the investigation to be speedy, Banerjee called for capital punishment to the perpetrator. She insisted that justice needs to be done to the victim and her bereaved family. “We will not stop until justice is served,” she said, echoing the sentiment of many who want accountability in this heinous crime. Her statements reflect growing concern for women’s safety and stringent measures to ensure prevention of such incidents in the future.

Healthcare Services
The agitations refused to die down. The Banerjee government expressed grave concern at the impact of incessant cease work by doctors on healthcare services. According to her, this resulted in tragic consequences, claiming three lives a minor and a pregnant woman. She pleaded with the agitating doctors to get back to work, saying, “If you feel good, I will touch your feet and request you to resume duties to help people with medical assistance.” Her appeal underlined the much-needed role played by the health professionals, more so at this juncture when crisis has just visited the State.

Political Tensions Escalate
The situation has also escalated into a political showdown, with Banerjee accusing opposition parties, especially the CPI(M) and BJP, of politicizing the tragedy for their gain. She said that these parties were trying to further incite unrest in West Bengal by citing student agitations in Bangladesh. She said that her party TMC would conduct protests across the state on August 17 in response to what she called the “Baam-Raam” conspiracy to defame Bengal, as the uproar over her remarks continued unabated.

The opposition camp’s protest against Banerjee’s remarks was not voiceless either. For BJP IT Cell Head Amit Malviya, the declaration of protest by the CM is “shocking and insensitive”. He termed it wrong on Banerjee’s part to divert attention from the urgent call for justice by announcing a political protest. Statements of Malviya pointed to a larger concern of opposition leaders whereby the TMC was trying to shift focus and reduce the magnitude of the situation arising out of the doctor’s tragic fate.

He further added, “Is it a crime to raise the voice for a young lady doctor who has been killed in cold blood?” The statement simply captured what many others were feeling – that the focus had to be on justice-seeking and not get mired in political disputes.

TMC to Opposition Criticism
Soon after Malviya’s comments, TMC leaders took no time to jump to the defence of Banerjee, demanding his arrest for allegedly threatening the Chief Minister. The swiftness in which both political parties engaged in a verbal spat pointed toward the disputable atmosphere over the issue. TMC spokespersons said that instead of political manoeuvres and gimmicks, the prime focus should be on the urgent need of bringing justice and safety to the women of the state.

The Way Forward: Justice and Reform
With the investigation set to be taken over by the CBI, all eyes would naturally be on quick delivery of justice. The young and promising life gone too early turned the spotlight once again on women’s safety and how these much-required reforms must carry through health and beyond. There is a growing clamour for legislation in boosting the security of healthcare workers, particularly women, against threats in their workplaces.

Of Unity and Action
What has happened in the wake of that unfortunate incident has brought West Bengal to stand at a juncture. While the political climate is getting more charged, the prime consideration has to be the delivery of justice to the victim and her family. Banerjee’s call for speedy investigation into the matter by the CBI and her care in returning healthcare to normalcy were steps in the right direction. This will have to become a collective effort at all levels, from the government to opposition parties to the common citizen itself, involving broader aspects of safety and issues of justice toward women in society. Once again, the tragedy in West Bengal puts forward the need for collective action and compassion.
