Protests by the Public

The incident has happened at a time when the state was already simmering with anger that another case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor had taken place in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. It had continued to trigger national outrage, massive protests by medical professionals, intervention by the Central Bureau of Investigation, and even the setting up of a National Task Force by the Supreme Court to ensure the safety of medical professionals.

Further to this, more than 100 women assembled at night in front of the Narkeldanga police station beyond Rehana Begum’s murder and inquired about the whereabouts of the missing child. Supreme Court’s Rebuke of Investigation

Expressing deep concern at the handling of the Kolkata rape and murder, the Supreme Court on Thursday said that the investigative lapses amount to putting a question by the authorities. The top court has come down harshly on the authorities for handling the case and not furnishing SATISFACTORY replies on its progress.

The court noted that there was a delay of fourteen hours in registering the FIR for the murder case but it was long before the delay of the autopsy. The Supreme Court directed the state government to ensure that an accountable police officer was present in court for the next hearing to report on these aspects.

Implications and Next Steps

The probing of the murder case of Rehana Begum and the rape-cum-murder of the trainee doctor itself continues to show not just a deeply troubling crime, but also concerns about the efficacy and effectiveness of policing seriously. The fact that the CBI and the Supreme Court are overseeing the investigation is indicative of enhanced judicial scrutiny of investigative processes.

As the legal and investigation process becomes lengthy, emphasis will be posed on seeking justice for the victims and doing away with the systemic issues now brought out to light. The demand for accountability from the public and the judiciary response will drive home the cases’ outcomes and faith in the judiciary again.
