CID to probe police negligence

Apart from probing protocol violations, the Karnataka government has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate possible negligence and dereliction of duty by police personnel. The CID will investigate whether law enforcement officials have failed in their responsibilities and is expected to submit its report within a week.

Ranya Rao Controversy

The controversy started when the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested Ranya Rao at KIA on March 3, 2025. The officials seized 14.2 kg of gold bars worth Rs 12.5 crore from her possession after she arrived from Dubai. Following her arrest, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a probe to unravel possible international links in the gold smuggling network.

Allegations of misuse of VIP protocol

Reports suggest that Ranya Rao availed VIP protocol privileges to evade strict security checks, allowing him to carry the smuggled gold without being caught. The Karnataka government in its official statement expressed serious concern over the possible misuse of power and stressed the need for a transparent investigation.

Legal action and case development on Ranya Rao

After the arrest, Ranya Rao was produced in court and later sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Besides, one of his close aides was also detained for further interrogation about his role in the smuggling operation.

The authorities are now closely investigating all aspects of the case, including possible security lapses at the airport and the role of law enforcement officials in facilitating or condoning the smuggling activity. The findings from the ongoing investigation are expected to shed light on key details and ensure accountability at all levels.
