Indian 2 Box Office Collection: Kamal Haasan Film Bombs; Fails to Reach Expectations
Kamal Haasan has long been busy with his next biggie, Indian 2, one of the most anticipated sequels in his filmography, under the direction of Shankar. Running high hopes, the movie was said to be set for wonders and was made on a big-budget, but it turned out a total disappointing results film. The much awaited sequel, Indian 2, has ended its wonderful run with pathetic results. Having struggled throughout the initial weeks, Indian 2 is now labelled a colossal disaster and has vice-versa drowned poorly at both domestic and international box office counters.
Domestic Box Office Disappointment
Indian 2 faced a hard fight at the box office, right from after its first week itself. Although the film had a bit of promise throughout the opening week, it lost steam in the later weeks. It still shouldn’t have found much competition in only its second week, but with its third week gone, Raayan has made sure the film gets pushed out of theatres.
Tamil Nadu: Rs 54.00 crore
Andhra Pradesh / Telangana AP / TS: Rs 25.50 crore
Karnataka: Rs 8.75 crore
Kerala: Rs 5.50 crore
Though Indian 2 is a sequel to the celebrated classic, it has seen a struggle in terms of box office performance, matching up with that predecessor. While the first Indian installment in 1996 was such a huge hit with approximately Rs 58 crore in India, when adjusted for inflation, it would amount to a whopping Rs 800 crore today.
International Box Office: A Letdown
Overseas, too, Indian 2 has managed to perform slightly below par. As already said, the overseas earning of the movie comes to $6,000,000 ₹50.25 crore. Here is a regional split-up of the international earnings:
United States: $1,725,000
Canada: $250,000
Oceania: $415,000
Middle East: $1,175,000
Malaysia: $1,050,000
These figures show that Indian 2 did not have an impressive catch outside of India, thereby reducing its global impact.
Comparison with Past Works
The film is a complete let-down, especially if one considers its precursor, Indian, which hit the silver screens of India way back in 1996 and was a blockbuster across the country. The movie was directed by none other than Shankar and was a landmark at the time, accruing inordinate expectations for the sequel. The sequel, Indian 2, has failed big time in living up to the expectations and carrying from its predecessor, the big brand value.
The Indian 2 acted as Kamal Haasan’s second-highest-grossing film until now, next to some of his previous works, including Dasavathaaram in 2008 and Vishwaroopam in 2013. This was significant in terms of the payback that the film offered to Haasan, although it paled in comparison to the movies mentioned above.
The Future of the Franchise
Poor performance by Indian 2 casts a shadow over the prospects of the franchise. Indian 3 is touted for release next year. Following the recent disappointment, one can sense a fear in everybody’s mind whether the upcoming film will suffer the same fate. The legacy of the original Indian stands tall and it needs to be seen whether the franchise will recover from the lost ground.
Conclusion
Indian 2 has reportedly earned 151 crores worldwide altogether, a performance that has set a grim reminder of tough challenges while making the sequel of a cult classic. While the industry and audiences make lessons from this turn of events, all now look up to the third installment that would hopefully bring a turn of fortunes for this franchise.
