Heavy Fire Exchanged between Israel and Hezbollah across Border

A dangerous escalation of the feud between Israel and Lebanon took place Sunday when Israel launched a bomb attack on Southern Beirut, while Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets into Northern Israel. The flames of conflict, fanned by the recent provocations and mutual recriminations, ratcheted up the apprehension over a full-scale war in this region.

Rocket Barrage Launched by Hezbollah
The Iranian-backed Shiite Lebanese militia group Hezbollah fired over 320 Katyusha rockets into Israel, some of which hit sensitive military targets. It issued a statement blaming Israel for provoking violence with last month’s assassination of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr by its support.

Israel Answers Back with Airstrikes
Israel launched precautionary airstrikes against Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon in retaliation for the rocket attacks. According to the military statement, it detected preparations for “large-scale” attacks and aimed at neutralizing threats posed against civilians of the State of Israel.

Israeli fighter jets struck hundreds of Hezbollah rocket launchers, destroying them and causing the frustration of further attacks by the group. Among the hit positions, those that immediately put the lives of civilians in Israel at risk were underlined.

Growing Tensions and Regional Implications
Spiraling violence came at the end of weeks where hostility between Israel and Hezbollah heightened. Shukr’s killing, combined with vows by Hezbollah and Iran for revenge, created an atmosphere that was full of tension.

The regional reach of these results could not be more important, as other actors in the Middle East might be party to this continued confrontation. Indeed, the United States reiterated its support for the right of Israel to self-defense and was in constant liaison with the government of Israel.

Humanitarian Concerns and Civilian Casualties
The war has also raised a lot of humanitarian concern since the involved parties have gone ahead to engage in military activities near highly populated areas. Fears of civilian casualty possibilities or displacements are also mooted when the fighting becomes intense.

A spurt in violence has delayed and diverted flights from Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport. It has disrupted the daily life of the people. The emergency services are kept on high alert, to react to any type of attack that could occur.

A Dangerous Precedent
The current standoff is obviously a radical escalation of the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah; no doubt, an extremely dangerous precedent which can destabilize the region vis-à-vis wider conflict.

What the international community has to do is engineer de-escalation of this situation to find some peaceful way whereby this conflict can be sorted out, and consequently save lives from death and languishing.
