Alcaraz Wins Wimbledon Again, Defeats Djokovic in Epic Final
Carlos Alcaraz is the champion of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships by winning this prestigious title for a second time, defeating Novak Djokovic.
The 21-year-old Alcaraz dominated the 37-year-old Djokovic in the final of the men’s singles on Centre Court in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6, on Sunday, July 14, at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England.
First, even though Alcaraz cruised through the first two rounds, the third set was quite tight, with both contenders locked at five games apiece. Alcaraz eventually edged out his opponent in a thrilling tiebreaker to seal the championship.
Right after he had won, Alcaraz remembered a childhood dream in which he had won Wimbledon. “I’m repeating my dream…” he said, according to CBS Sports. “For me, this is the most beautiful tournament, the most beautiful court, and obviously the most beautiful trophy.”
For Djokovic, all praise poured out to Alcaraz: “He had it all today. He was an absolutely deserving winner. Huge congratulations to him for amazing tennis.” He said, “You are only 21 years old. This is incredible; keep it going. We’ll see so much of you guys, I’m sure.”
Carlos Alcaraz once again introduced the world to his tennis aptitude by winning the 2024 Wimbledon Championship, his second time introducing himself to this most famous court. This 21-year-old guy spent 2 hours on Sunday, July 14, defeating 37-year-old Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 4 on Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England.
Basically, it was dominance from the first set by Alcaraz, even though both players were tied at five games apiece in the third set. Alcaraz pushed through in a tense tiebreaker to claim the championship.
Weeks ago, Alcaraz also became the champion at the French Open in Roland Garros. This hardly ever happens – most players never get to do it in their entire careers – and with both titles this season, Alcaraz has become the first youngest player ever to have done it ahead of even superstars Rafael Nadal and Bjorn Borg. Borg did at 22 years and 32 days old, while Nadal did it at 22 years and 33 days old.
That means Alcaraz, now defending champion, took down Djokovic in last year’s final here. Of course, he regained the championship but still wasn’t the youngest to pull off this double. Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg did at an earlier age: Becker at 18 years and 227 days in 1985-86, Borg at 21 years and 26 days in 1976-77.

With this talent and at such an early age in his career, everything seems possible for the young Spanish player. The other way, the pressure is on Djokovic after losing badly for the second week in a row on English grass. Alcaraz has closed in on the No 2 in both the ATP ranking and the Race ranking—for the ATP Finals and the year-end No 1—closing to within 250 on Jannik Sinner.
