For a long period, India and Singapore have been joined in a close and dynamic relationship underpinned by deep economic, cultural, and strategic linkages. This was recently again reinvigorated at the 2nd round of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) in Singapore. During this meeting, both countries reviewed the status of implementation of the strategic partnership and introduced two more pillars, namely, ‘Advanced Manufacturing’ and ‘Connectivity’, to spur further growth of bilateral cooperation. This process is thus going to help the long-standing and robust partnership already existing between India and Singapore in developing economic cooperation for mutual growth.

Strategic Partnership Review

The meeting of ISMR reviewed the progress made in the strategic partnership between India and Singapore, especially on some identified pillars during the first meeting of ISMR in New Delhi on September 17, 2022, namely, Digitalization, Skills Development, Sustainability, and Healthcare and Medicine. The Ministers of both countries took cognizance of the progress made in these areas and deliberated on new ideas for further expansion of bilateral cooperation.

New Pillars of Cooperation: Advanced Manufacturing and Connectivity
Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing

Inclusion of Advanced Manufacturing as a new pillar of cooperation between India and Singapore shows that both countries are committed towards leveraging technologies and innovation for economic growth. Advanced manufacturing encompasses smart manufacturing and automation, using the latest technologies such as AI and robotics, which has been considered a major driver of future industrial growth. With advanced manufacturing in the spotlight of the interests of these two countries, their ambition goes back to extending each country’s manufacturing capacity, increasing productivity, and subsequently creating high-skilled employment. This cooperation will also contribute to learning and replicating best practices in both countries regarding the manufacturing sector, hence devising a better and greener production process.

Strengthening Connectivity

This has been another important area of interest which has emerged between India and Singapore. Physical and digital connectivity is most necessary to foster trade, investments, and exchanges between both countries. If it were connectivity, economic linkages that interlink both India and Singapore would be much stronger, with enhanced supply chain resilience and integration within the region. It could involve projects in infrastructure development such as the conngenation of ports, airports, and logistical hubs. This will go hand in glove with improvement in connectivity. Digital connectivity is quite necessary in the world of growing digital economies. This will further facilitate e-commerce, fin-tech, and digital services collaboration, opening a lot of horizons for business on both sides.

Strengthening Economic and Strategic Ties
Commitment to a Multidimensional Partnership

The ISMR reiterated the commitment of both India and Singapore to further strengthening their multifaceted partnership. During the visit to Singapore, the Indian ministers called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore, indicating high-level engagement plays an important role in fostering closer ties between the two nations. Speaking on the occasion, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong termed the India-Singapore Ministerial Dialogue an important platform for strengthening bilateral relations while underlining mutual benefits of the partnership.

Increasing Cooperation in Priority Areas

Besides the new pillars of Advanced Manufacturing and Connectivity, the meeting of ISMR provided a great opportunity for both countries to discuss expanding cooperation on remaining priority areas. Some critical areas of cooperation include digitalization, skills development, sustainability, and healthcare, which both countries have committed themselves to leveraging their relative strengths and expertise toward common objectives. The fact that this has happened continuously will have overall greater regional stability and prosperity, not just for India and Singapore but for the region as a whole.

Strong Foundation for Future Cooperation: Next Steps and Way Forward

The Ministers agreed to hold the next iteration of ISMR in India on a mutually convenient date, thereby implying commitments to continued engagements of this nature as part of their regular practice. In fact, such ministerial meetings provide an avenue for reviewing progress on previously assigned tasks, finding solutions to the problems being faced, and also discussing options for new areas of cooperation. This strong partnership foundation between both countries continues to grow, and emphases now are being made on advanced manufacturing and connectivity as the drivers of economic growth and the bilateral relationship.

A Win-Win Partnership

A strategic partnership for building advanced manufacturing and connecting them between India and Singapore surely reflects the win-win partnership the two countries were seeking. As a matter of fact, a great and vibrant market on the Indian side combines with a global financial and innovation hub in Singapore, making the synergy an enabler of economic growth and development. Working together, India and Singapore can therefore take their strategic partnership to harness the potential for remedying likely global challenges, promoting regional stability, and attaining sustainable development.

Conclusion
The 2nd round of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable is another step forward in moving toward their ongoing cooperation. With the addition of new pillars of cooperation in advanced manufacturing and connectivity, India and Singapore forge a path toward more integrated prosperity. As two countries continuing to come together in areas of mutual interest, their strategic partnership must work toward enhancing not only their bilateral relations but also regional and global stability. The commitments from both sides to further their multi-faceted partnership provide a firm guarantee that the India-Singapore relationship will indeed go from strength to strength in the coming years.
