Ex-England Batter Graham Thorpe Dies at 55
Former England and Surrey batter, Graham Thorpe passed on Saturday, aged 55. Since 2022, the batter fought a long illness. The England and Wales Cricket Board decried being deeply saddened and losing one of the greats in English cricket on Monday.
A Great Career in Cricket
Graham Thorpe represented in 100 Test matches, from 1993 to 2005. An elegant and attacking left-hand bat, he was very important to his side in ensuring success through the late 1990s and the early part of the 2000s. He ended his career with a fine record, averaging 44.66 with 16 centuries a class act and one of the very best in his generation of batsmen.

Speaking on behalf of Hampshire, Oli Slipper’s Chair said the club and its supporters felt a great sense of loss. He continued: “Graham is one of the great sons of Surrey and there is an overwhelming sadness that he will not walk through the gates of the Oval again. He is more than a legend to Surrey and brought out great pride for the Club wearing both the Three Feathers and the Three Lions. He made outstanding contributions to the Club as a cricketer and as a man and he will be so sorely missed.”
Family and Personal Life
Thorpe is survived by his wife, Amanda, and their four children: Henry, Amelia, Kitty, and Emma. He was very close to his family, and he would often be heard discussing how he balanced professional commitments with family life to be a good husband and father.
His legacy will live on not only through the records he set and the matches he played but also with the countless number of lives he touched as a coach and a friend in the world of cricket.
